What that camera usually finds depends on the age of the house above it. This suburb carries some of the oldest housing stock on the Upper North Shore, Federation Queen Anne cottages sitting alongside mid-century brick homes and later heritage residences, most on large leafy blocks that have barely been subdivided.

Stormwater surcharge follows close behind. High rainfall on the shale-capped ridge routinely overwhelms older, undersized stormwater runs, especially on the steeper blocks toward the valley edges.

Sloped-block drainage causes the rest. The rolling drop toward the surrounding bushland pushes runoff and silt into whichever section of pipe sits lowest, and that is often where an old line finally gives out. None of the three is obvious from the surface, which is exactly why an inspection camera goes in before anything is quoted.
